It’s a big night for theatre lovers as Georgia Southern University welcomes a special guest

STATESBORO, GA—An evening with Pulitzer Prize Winning Playwriter Jackie Sibblies Drury happened Thursday night inside the Nessmith Lane Conference Center. The event was hosted by the Department of Communication Arts and sponsored by the Theatre Department. Admission was open to the public and free for all in attendance.

Jackie Sibblies Drury is a Brooklyn-based play-writer who is well known for her infamous drama play "Fairview." The storyline itself is based on stereotypes and racism in society. Drury answered commentary questions and gave an insider scoop on what to expect in her future projects.

The moderators of the panel were Associate Professor Nicholas Newell and Dramaturg Ashanti Jones.

Newell directed a GSU production of Fairview which ran in earlier Oct. and received positive feedback from attendees.

"The play is very experiential--which makes it more powerful than a thing you read or hear,”  Newell said.

According to New York Times co-chief theater critic Ben Brantley —described the critically acclaimed play as uncomfortable and without safe sight to land.

Yet, despite mixed reviews, Drury takes pride in the acknowledgment of her work winning a Pulitzer Prize. “Most shows are about something traumatic—even comedies,” said Drury. I was really excited to have black actors show the ability to be technical and precise when embracing a character.”
