Homecoming kicks off early this year with back to the 2000’s theme and nostalgic activities

STATESBORO, GA—The University Program Board announces homecoming week as Sept.18- 24 via social media and their website due to the interference of the football schedule.

Homecoming is usually late Oct. or early Nov. —but this year options were limited. According to the Director of Athletics Jared Benko, the only non-conference home game available was thanksgiving week or the week of Sept. 18. It’s required the beginning of homecoming week must align with student fees, it was agreed to have homecoming ASAP for students to enjoy.

Though the hoco date was earlier than expected, this didn’t stop the activities from having a successful turnout. Campaigns went on, competitions became lively, and the parade remained festive. Hundreds of students and alumni attended some of the staple events: doo-dah, crowning homecoming King and Queen, and the t-shirt grab.

Another staple event apart of Eagle Nation is the sidewalk chalk competition. This year, 12  organizations participated in the idea of presenting a poster-like drawing in front of the gates of Paulson Stadium— incorporating the  homecoming theme and overall GSU school spirit.

“I believe  Jesus saves no matter the decade…and that’s why I decided to include how great is our God in my artwork,” Baptist Collegiate Ministries Ashley Moody said.

Participants provided their own materials and were judged by student judges on school spirit, theme, and creativity.

The sidewalk challenge has been an activity for the last few years. However, it originally was a window challenge. Students used to be given a huge  sheet of contact paper and assigned windows at Hanner field house, Paulson stadium, and the dining commons. Conceptually, the idea was very similar to the sidewalk challenge, although it was concluded to be much harder for students, causing it to be discontinued.

This year’s winners from the chalk competition: Phi delta theta and Kappa Kappa gamma Epsilon received a small eagle head trophy along with the name of crowned sidewalk champions. Second place: Alpha Omicron Pi and Third place: Baptist Collegiate Ministries.

“The sidewalk art not only captures the eye of football players when they arrive but spectators,  people from the community, and alumni. They get a chance to see our real eagle spirit,” the Director of the office of student activities and engagement, Memory Little said.
